That's a wrap: Looking back on 2022
A year of growth
I don’t need to tell you that it’s been a volatile year for B2B SaaS. In the midst of market uncertainty, the OpsLevel team has managed to hit some exciting growth milestones. Earlier this year, we raised a $15M Series A round to help grow from a service catalog to a full-fledged developer portal. Since that announcement in March, seemingly every week we’ve had new wins, released new features, and welcomed new team members on our mission to help platform engineers realize a higher software standard for their organizations.
To close out the year, I want to share a few highlights of 2022 and a few big things we’re looking forward to in the new year.
- We grew the team. We’ve surpassed the 50-person marker, and if you’re in startup land, you know this is a significant milestone. In the last 6 months, the go-to-market team tripled, and our product and engineering teams doubled. Even though we’re still a small group overall, growth at this rate comes with new challenges, and we’ve put in the work to make sure everyone has the resources they need to be successful.
- 300% growth. I think we can all agree that this year was one of uncertainties. Still, one thing remained clear–platform engineers and leaders are looking to invest in tools that support business initiatives while shaping a better developer experience for their teams. We don’t see signs of this slowing down. Teams need to do more than ever with their resources, so it only makes sense that leadership in some of the most innovative companies aims to make the development cycle smoother and more efficient.
- From service catalog to internal developer portal. We shared our goal of product investments that would help us strengthen our position in the developer portal space. With new features like Service Templates, Tech Docs, and a slew of new integrations, we’re happy to share that we’re now replacing more than just an outdated wiki or spreadsheet. Teams use OpsLevel to drive best practices, instill their unique standards, monitor the health of services, and ship more reliable software.
- Continuing “Defaulting to Open”. That’s our motto. We share (nearly) everything internally with OpsLevelers. It’s only fair that we do that for our customers as well. We made real progress toward this goal in 2022 with public pricing, FAQs, product tours, sandboxes, and demo videos.
- Partnerships as a priority. We’ve joined the AWS Marketplace and have prioritized investment in partnerships. With new team members that have deep experience in the partner ecosystem, we’re excited to add more best-in-class brands to our program.
- Back to in-person events. Not just a healthy way to maintain connections with coworkers, but we also had the chance to meet face-to-face with customers and community members at KubeCon and several NADOG events.
So what’s next?
We’re not slowing down anytime soon. In the new year, you can expect a few big feature releases right off the bat, easier ways to experience and purchase OpsLevel, and more investment in resources and support for our customers.
There are other tools and portals, and we know that choosing the right one for your business requires insight and research. To make your job of procuring tools for your team easier than before, we’re doubling down on data to support your decision. This means you’ll be able to build a quick ROI case for your leadership team or provide a competitive feature breakdown to share with stakeholders so you know exactly how we stack up.
In addition to some of the transparency efforts I mentioned in this year’s highlights, we will continue to drive honest customer reviews, fact sheets, and feature documentation.
Since we had so much fun this year at in-person events, we’re gearing up for a busy year of travel. You can find us at regional events like NADOG and DevOps Days, as well as DevOps Live UK and AWS Re:Invent. We’ll add a few more to the calendar over the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for OpsLevelers in your city next year.
All in all, it’s been a productive year for our team. We did things we didn’t think were possible, we added more new faces than any year previously, and we learned more than ever from our thousands of OpsLevel users. After some rest and relaxation (and champagne), we’ll get back to work on helping engineering leaders build a better developer experience.
Cheers!
